Fetishes have been carved for centuries for ceremonial use by the tribes of the Southwest. The oldest fetishes, found in archeological excavations, have been dated as far back as the 7th Century. According to Zuni belief, all true fetishes are petrifications of the animals they represent, and the fetish carver is merely recognizing the animal's spirit in the stone. If properly cared for, the fetish is believed to assist its possessor in accomplishing certain tasks or feats. Strings of fetishes have become talismans, providing the wearer the strength of the animals represented. The fetishes we offer are specifically made for jewelry making. They are pre-drilled for ease in stringing. These fetishes are NOT native made. |
